Holly Wood dies in Perth, aged 68

HOLLY Wood, veteran social writer with The Sunday Times, died this morning after a long battle with cancer.

The much-loved social scene writer was 68.

Affectionately known in the industry as "Holly'', the popular columnist with The Sunday Times was well known and respected in Perth's fashion, charity and social world.

Holly will be remembered as much for his work with Perth charities, as his contribution to the media.

A private man who partied with the stars

Holly partied with millionaires and superstars but he was an intensely private person who would not let any one over the front doorstep of his humble flat in North Perth which was decorated in Royal Family memorabilia, writes STM colleague Gail Williams.

He knew he was gay from an early age but tried to fight against it, which led to his short lasting marriage.

He moved to Perth in the late 70s and ran a restaurant, Feathers, which attracted hordes of followers for his colourful MC-ing.

He quickly became a high profile character in Perth’s gay scene. He assumed the name Holly after Holly Go Lightly, the lead Audrey Hepburn character in his favourite film

He was a shining example of work ethic to his colleagues -- he was always positive in the way he approached his illness and had never taken a sick day before he got cancer.

He chose to die in his own way, living each day until the very end

His colleagues will miss his familiar flamboyant entry into the office: “Did you miss me?”

Yes Holly.

R.I.P. Holly. And thank you for the cocktails back in 1989 and 1990 at the numerous parties around Perth. The full obituary is available from the above link care of Perthnow (www.news.com.au/Perthnow/)

Rub-on 'Super Viagra' cream works

SCIENTISTS are developing a cream that promises to act faster than Viagra - and without the side effects.

PerthNow reports the lotion is said to produce almost instant results, unlike anti-impotence tablets which can take 30 minutes to an hour before taking effect.

...perhaps its the rubbing? You can by KY now and I bet its a lot cheaper! ;)

*Joking*

Its good to see more scientific developments to help the poor blokes who can't get it up for whatever reason. Keep it up Science people! Oops, pardon the pun!

Perth geeks join reality show: do you know them? | PerthNow

Helen Ganska

PERTH doesn't have a beauty, but we do have two WA geeks in Channel 7's new reality show Beauty and the Geek Australia - and we want to know who they are?

“People will love this show because of its warm-hearted centre,” said Curry

“It’s about celebrating differences and Australia will identify with both the geeks and beauties because there’s a little bit of both in all of us.”

Perthnow

I am a confessed voyeur of reality-television. I don't mind some of it. I was there for the start of it all with Sylvannia Waters (back in the 20th Century!!!) and followed it through to Australia's version of Big Brother in a big way.

Beauty and the Geek is another imported concept and will no-doubt bring another onslaught of admiration and humiliation for the contestants and show in general. Its a shame though, that the marketing lines behind these sorts of programs aren't just a little more honest!

"Warm-hearted centre"?? I don't think so. This will be about humiliation. Not quite in the Japanese-extreme-quiz-show-style but certainly about poking fun at "Geeks", nerds, techno-heads and those that will represent all those bullied kids in school who don't quite fit in.

Is it a good thing? Well its just television, what does it matter. I don't want to get into the whole "sensibility and sensitivity debate" that's not what it is about. But wait for it. There is bound to be some form of outrage from our conservative-entertainment-right.

Will the "Aussie" mantra of batting for the battler shine through? Lets see how this one goes!
