Witnesses claim vanloads of German backpackers are sneaking meals from a Perth soup kitchen set up to hand out food to homeless people.

Four vehicles drove up to join the  homeless at the Red Cross Soup Patrol van at Northbridge last night, which followed a similar pattern of the past week or so, Radio 6PR reported.

  • A caller, Steve, claimed the tourists, armed with Apple laptop computers, did not look like "they're flat broke and stuck in the country with no escape".

They were given soup and "bags and bags of bread" and then left.

He said he approached kitchen workers, who told him while they were aware the newcomers were tourists, they could not refuse anyone food.

Tourists? Soup-kitchen? Surely not? The Red Cross Soup Patrol and the other food suppliers that help homeless or less-fortunate people do a fantastic job. It doesn't need this sort of deception (if indeed it is true!).

Even though I understand that some of the providers do have surplus food on occasions. It must be difficult to judge what will be enough. But, stories like this do nothing but either make-light of the services or deter those that are in real need, I am sure.

And on a similar note, a reminder to us all...

The "christmas season" is fast approaching, many families and individuals rely on these services during this time, not just for food, but for company during this time. Will you do anything? Support them? Volunteer? Or at least give a thought to those not in the same situation as yourself or family.

Woman sentenced to hang for blasphemy - WAToday.com.au

    Asiabibi420-420x0
A Christian woman has been sentenced to hang in Pakistan after being convicted of defaming the Prophet Mohammed.

Asia Bibi, a 45-year-old mother-of-five, denies blasphemy and told investigators that she was being persecuted for her faith in a country where Christians face routine harassment and discrimination.

Christian groups and human rights campaigners condemned the verdict and called for the blasphemy laws to be repealed.

Her supporters say she will now appeal against the sentence handed down in a local court in the town of Sheikhupura, near Lahore, Pakistan.

Ashiq Masih, her husband, said he had not had the heart to break the news to two of their children.

Its 2010 and we live in a world where this sort of thing happens all to frequently. Whatever you believe, religion or otherwise, and whether its a woman, a man, a loving same-sex-couple or children, this sort of "justice" is hard to digest, even in Pakistan!

I just thought it was worth noting. It won't change a thing. But it is worth being aware that this is the world we live in sometimes.

Honestly, who could resist a headline like "Jupiter's big gash" - but seriously, the recent upgrade to Hubble (HST) has provided new insights into, not only Jupiter, but the amazing extent of our universe.

But get a load of Jupter's gash! LOL
