WA drought 'could be worst for 750 years'

Scientists have made a surprising link between climate patterns in Australia and Antarctica.

Since the 1970s, there has been a decline of up to 20 per cent in winter rainfall in the South-West and, though the cause of the drought remains unclear, others have pointed to land-use changes, ocean temperatures, air circulation changes and natural variability.

But its severity has been hard to calculate, with weather records going back only about 100 years, and the oldest tree-ring record, 350 years, from a site that has not been affected by the drought.

Yes, lets not get too overly dramatic Chalpat! 750 years huh? Nice way to sensationalise a story!

Will those people that advocate for climate change politics please stick to facts? They expect everyone else too!

Perth geeks join reality show: do you know them? | PerthNow

Helen Ganska

September 07, 2009 01:00pm

PERTH doesn't have a beauty, but we do have two WA geeks in Channel 7's new reality show Beauty and the Geek Australia - and we want to know who they are?

“People will love this show because of its warm-hearted centre,” said Curry

“It’s about celebrating differences and Australia will identify with both the geeks and beauties because there’s a little bit of both in all of us.”

Perthnow

I am a confessed voyeur of reality-television. I don't mind some of it. I was there for the start of it all with Sylvannia Waters (back in the 20th Century!!!) and followed it through to Australia's version of Big Brother in a big way.

Beauty and the Geek is another imported concept and will no-doubt bring another onslaught of admiration and humiliation for the contestants and show in general. Its a shame though, that the marketing lines behind these sorts of programs aren't just a little more honest!

"Warm-hearted centre"?? I don't think so. This will be about humiliation. Not quite in the Japanese-extreme-quiz-show-style but certainly about poking fun at "Geeks", nerds, techno-heads and those that will represent all those bullied kids in school who don't quite fit in.

Is it a good thing? Well its just television, what does it matter. I don't want to get into the whole "sensibility and sensitivity debate" that's not what it is about. But wait for it. There is bound to be some form of outrage from our conservative-entertainment-right.

Will the "Aussie" mantra of batting for the battler shine through? Lets see how this one goes!

Ronald Mitchell in flames after Taser strike

Taser
Armed ... a police officer prepares to deploy a Taser gun / File
  • Man engulfed in flames after Taser used
  • Had been petrol-sniffing, says family
  • Suffers burns to 20 per cent of body

A MAN from a remote western desert community was last night being airlifted to a Perth hospital after he was shot by police with a Taser gun and engulfed in flames.

The incident happened about midday yesterday at the West Australian community of Warburton after police went to a house where Ronald Mitchell and others were sniffing petrol.

I think its pretty damn obvious peoples. Electricity sparks and petrol fumes DO NOT MIX well!

Next we will see signs at Petrol Stations - Do Not Use Tasers while refuelling!

It is sad that this happens, but when you have a raging full-grown man hurtling toward you with a can of petrol, there are not many options. At least, with this, he was not a victim of the "shoot to kill" mentality we have seen so often in the past from Police.

Deformed kitten dumped in bin

Deformed kitten dumped in bin

A KITTEN, forced to stand like a kangaroo due to a bone deformity which has twisted its front legs, has been found dumped in a bin in Geraldton.

I haven't ready this story in full. I don't like hearing of such things and I don't have the heart to read more about it. It is just an act of sheer unnecessary cruelty and I hate reading about such things, but still feel it is important to remind people of the fact there are people out there that will hurt, torture, even kill helpless animals. These people are probably capable of a lot more hurt - at what point do we just don't care?
